Complementary therapies

Complementary therapies play an important role in the care we provide for patients and carers.

Our trained volunteer therapists offer a range of treatments, including Aromatherapy Massage, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Reiki. Used alongside conventional healthcare, these therapies have been shown to assist in promoting relaxation, alleviating anxieties, improving sleep pattern and reducing stress and tension. All of which can help to improve someone's general well-being and quality of life.

The four most frequently used therapies at the hospice are:

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils derived from plants. These oils are used to enhance a person's mental and physical well-being. Familiar examples of oils are Chamomile, Lavender, Rosemary and Eucalyptus.

There are many ways to use the oils, but the most common use is in massage. The therapist will blend essential oils with a massage oil or cream, before using them in a soothing massage. This may be on the hands or feet, or the back, neck and shoulders, depending on what is preferred. The blend of oils will depend on the individual's needs and condition.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves gentle pressure being applied to the feet in order to 'rebalance' the body. The therapy is based on the belief that different areas of the feet are related to different areas of the body. By applying light pressure to the appropriate area, the therapist will aim to restore a state of balance and relaxation.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is a treatment based on old Ayurvedic techniques involving work on the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face.

The therapist will use a variety of massage movements to relieve tension, stimulate circulation and restore joint movement. The therapy is also used to help reduce stress and fatigue, increase mental clarity, and relax and rejuvenate the individual. The amount of pressure and the approach is varied to suit each individual.

Reiki

Reiki is the channelling of energy to activate the body’s natural healing. It is simple and non-invasive. A treatment takes up to an hour and involves the therapist either placing their hands on or above different areas. As this involves hardly any contact, Reiki is one of our more popular therapies.
