Esther opens new In-patient Unit

Esther Rantzen cuts official ribbonBroadcaster Esther Rantzen opened our new adult In-patient Unit on Monday 9 November.

During her visit, Esther cut the official ribbon and handed out commemorative gifts to the first patients and their families.

Our new unit boasts eight en suite bedrooms, all with Jacuzzi baths, ceiling hoists to move patients around easily, private patios, controlled heating, lighting and ventilation in very room and piped oxygen direct to patients’ bedsides.

Esther said on the day: "This unit is a shining example of sheer excellence. You can sense from the atmosphere as soon as you walk in that this is a happy place, dedicated to making every moment and memory good.”

Our care team has settled in well to the new unit and the first patients have been singing its praises.

Esther meets Daphne at the openingDaphne, from Dunstable, uses the hospice to control the pain caused by cancer of the spine and lungs. Having spent time on the old unit, she said: “When I first saw the new unit, I fell in love with it! It is so modern and comfortable and I have a nice view of the patio and gardens.

“I have been for a bath in the en suite. It was so easy using the hoist and the nurses are so great. It’s a transformation and I feel at home here, with my photos on the notice board and the drawers full of my things.”

The new unit, which cost £2.65 million in total, now offers the very best levels of comfort, dignity and specialist care for patients and their families across Luton and South Bedfordshire.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the project and helped us transform the care we provide in our adult hospice.
