Little Santa’s make a run for Keech

Pupils at Chantry Primary Academy in Luton are limbering up to join hundreds of Father Christmases for the town’s popular Santa Run.

Keech Hospice Care’s 5km sponsored run on Sunday 13 December at Wardown Park is festive family fun and the chance to raise money for the Luton charity.

It’s not all about the walking or the running though for Carson Fitzgerld, 8, from Chantry Primary Academy.

“I can wear my Santa beard!” said Carson, “I’ve always wanted a beard. I’m really looking forward to dressing up and running. Everyone should take part and get lots of money for Keech as some children won’t have as much fun this Christmas,” he said.

Lara Shodeinde, 8, also from Chantry Primary Academy, is just as enthusiastic.

“I like running,” said Lara, “it’s my favourite sport. 5km is quite a long way but I can walk too if I get tired and it’s going to be fun,” she said.

In the past year, Keech Hospice Care has supported 474 adults and 255 children with life limiting illnesses. £5.2 million is needed each year by Keech so it can continue to provide free, specialist care and vital support to patients as well as their family and friends at a time in their lives they need it most. It means, as a charity, Keech depends on 70% of its funding to come from the community for its survival.

Jamie Kelly, Assistant Headteacher of Chantry Primary Academy, said Keech is a vital part of Luton.

“As a school, we’re always keen to support and get behind Keech as the charity does such a fantastic job for children and adults in the town and surrounding areas,” Mr Kelly said.

“Our students jumped at the chance to give the Santa Run a go and they’re really looking forward to not only the run, but the brilliant warm-up Keech does before the Santa’s all get on their marks, get set and ho ho ho.

“With millions of rooftops to reach in just one night, Santa must be pretty quick on his feet. Our students are planning to have lots of fun and give him a run for his money,” he said.
